I work as a legal assistant, and one of my jobs is typing dictation tapes. Imagine my surprise when, in the middle of a tape from one of my senior attorneys, I hear him say-

“In my world, everyone is a pony, and they all eat smiles and rainbows, and poop butterflies.”

He was teasing his young daughter, who had been playing with his hand-held microcassette recorder.

I'm not sure how best to blackmail him with this information, but I'll think of something.

Inappropriate use of technology at Walgreens

On my way to the park this morning with the most spoiled dog in the world, I stopped at Walgreens for my customary newspaper and iced diet green tea purchases (hey, it's an addiction, but it's a cheap addiction.) When I walked past the photo lab area, I noticed a large, hairy gentleman of the Bubba persuasion sitting at one of the kiosks. I glanced over his shoulder, and saw that he was downloading photos of himself. Naked in a bath tub, doing a double biceps pose. I was going to ask for a copy, but I didn't think we would be too forthcoming.

I've got to start carrying my camera.

In which my dog almost gets me killed at the Pagan Picnic

I took Ginger, the most spoiled Chow Chow in the world, with me to the 15th annual Pagan Picnic on Saturday here in St. Louis. In hindsight, this probably wasn’t a good idea.

I was standing in front of a vendor’s booth when I noticed three huge biker guys in Utilikilts standing next to me. Okay, that’s not quite true. I noticed them first, and sidled over next to them to get a better look. (Long hair, beards, interesting tattoos and huge calves!) Unfortunately, I wasn’t the only curious one.

I felt a tug on my dog’s leash, and look down in time to see her stick her head under the lead biker’s kilt, then lift her head, sliding his kilt slid halfway up his thighs. He froze, looked down, and then looked over at me. We both look down again, and Ginger started wagging her tail.

No words were exchanged. He reached down and delicately pulled up the edge of his kilt and took a step back, removing his tender bits from danger. I moved Ginger closer to me. Then I said “You wouldn’t believe how long it took me to teach her to do that!”

I saw “28 Weeks Later”, and one thing puzzles me. In the first movie, the “rage-infected” zombies were so stupid that they all starved to death because they couldn’t remember how to eat. But in this sequel, the first zombie infected is able to use his key card to move around a secure military facility?

On the upside, the real name of the actress who played the teenage daughter in the movie is Imogeen Poots.

In which I dodge a kitten-shaped bullet

I ran out to Eureka, Missouri this afternoon to shop at the Super WalMart. (Yeah, I know they're the devil, but they're so cheap! To help counteract my guilt, I always break something while I'm there.)

Walking up to the entrance, I saw a little boy trying to give away a very small, calico kitten. The empty box by his feet told me he'd given the rest of the litter away, but he didn't seem to be having much luck with this last little girl. The kitten was crying, the kid seemed to be at the point of tears, and all of my internal Cat-alarms went off.

I've already got two elderly cats, and one very spoiled Chow Chow. My lease stipulates one cat and one dog, but luckily the felines are sisters, and look enough alike to fake out my landlord on his infrequent visits to my apartment. But, like everyone else in my family, animals seeking a cushy home seem to find us. My twin's oldest cat found him when he was working at a steel mill - Bryan opened his lunch box, and she ran out from between two huge piles of scrap metal, went straight up his leg, and dove in the box. When I lived in San Francisco, I had a black persian kitten, no more than 12 weeks old, scale a ten foot high fence to cry outside my door until I let her in. I knew if the kitten and the kid were still there when I left WalMart, I was going to end up with a new, albeit tiny, mouth to feed.

I admit, I spent more time in the store than usual - who knew the kind of hot guys that hole up in the camping department? And when I came out, I held to door for a young mother, her twin daughters... AND THE KITTEN! The girls were discussing possible names, and the kitty was perched on her new owner's shoulder.

Thank God.

Of course, now I want a kitten.

Sorry I haven’t posted for so long, but I underwent lap-band surgery in March, and I’m happy to say I’ve lost 53 pounds since March 1st! Admittedly, it’s a drop in the bucket (I want to lose 100-120 more), but it’s a start.

I also joined a local gym which, eye candy aside, is pretty nice, and remarkably affordable at $19 a month. I’m probably another 50 pounds away from actually using the indoor water park, but I’m looking forward to it.

In the elevator on the way back from lunch today, I heard a woman refer to someone she works with as being "One skip short of a full truck load." I don't know whether to be amused, or just move the hell out of here...

Yesterday, I went to the orthopedic surgeon for my six week follow-up exam. I had arch supports made, and he wanted to make sure they were working. My appointment was at 4 p.m. I arrived early, and was escorted into an exam room, where I waited, and waited. For 90 minutes.

The wait wasn’t so bad, but I’m pretty sure the anatomical model of the flayed foot moved at least twice when I wasn’t looking at it.
